Tv for kids
In the Philippines, the TV set is much a member of the
family as Nanay and Tatay. Many parents plunk their children down in front of
the screen and leave them to be distracted while the adults go about their
business. The television has taken on
the all-important role of “babysitter” ought to ring alarm bells, especially
because some parents essentially trust its content as not only safe but perhaps
even good for their kids.
Big mistake. It’s not for nothing that TV is called a wasteland
as much for its brain numbing variety shows that carry risqué jokes and
sadistic games as the gory news footages that are shown even during times when
children are sure to be watching. This is the major concern of the government today
that the parents have entrusted their children in watching TV shows without
parental guidance. Then, the MTRCB got blamed when the children are out of
control because of the influence of the TV shows especially when it is for
adults only. The correct guidance begins at home. Parents should play their
major part in parenting their children because other educational programs or
entertainment programs are only vacillators.
It must remain a challenge to
parties, the MTRCB and the parents and guardians to tame TV and use it as a
teaching tool. Everyone should be reminded of their fundamental responsibility.
If we succeed in self- regulation, the audience, particularly the parents,
should be empowered with information - specifically on the importance of
age-appropriate classification. Networks, film producers and the industry
stakeholders should understand that though we have different professional
goals, we agree that our most important role as individuals is that of being a
parents.
